Welcome to the website of the Michiana
Health Information Network. This site is owned and operated
by MHIN to provide information about the community-based
electronic record service that we provide to physicians,
hospitals, laboratories, radiology groups, and other ambulatory
service centers throughout Michiana. Current system users
may also gain secure access to the MHIN system via the ‘client
login’ on this site.
Healthcare
Information Confidentiality and Security
MHIN is committed to the highest standards of healthcare
information confidentiality and website security to protect
the information conveyed to, stored, and accessed by user
of its system. All information within the MHIN system is
considered private and confidential. This information includes
all patient, employee, physician and corporate data in verbal,
written or electronic form. Permission to access the MHIN
system and data is granted to physicians and staff based
on specific criteria related to each patient. Privacy officers
at MHIN and customer locations monitor user access closely. MHIN also utilizes sophisticated technology to monitor network
access.
Internet Access
to the MHIN System
MHIN uses the internet to provide existing users with access
to MHIN’s electronic medical record system. These
users have been trained on the MHIN system and have signed
a security contract before receiving a username, setting
up a password, and accessing the system via the internet
or a direct network connection. The contract prohibits the
use of any information on the MHIN system for other than
patient care purposes.
Website Security
MHIN has established safeguards to make all information
as secure as possible. The MHIN secure network utilizes
firewalls, encryption, and Public Key Infrastructure to
protect patient identifiable data and system user information
in accordance with anticipated HIPAA regulations. Patient
identifiable information on the MHIN system is stored in
a clinical data repository (CDR) located on equipment that
is not connected to the internet. The CDR and the firewall-protected
internet servers reside in a fully redundant data center
with controlled access, backup power generators, and other
security measures.
Information
Disclosure
MHIN does not sell or share any information that resides
in the MHIN system, or about customers or users of the system.
MHIN will not disclose to any third party any information
that could be used to identify or contact the customers,
users, or patients whose records reside on the system, unless
such disclosure is required by law or court order.
Secure access to confidential
patient information is a cornerstone of MHIN’s founding
principles. These principles reflect community standards
as well as anticipated HIPAA regulations and other regulatory
requirements. MHIN and its customers have always enforced
strict adherence to MHIN’s policies and procedures
regarding confidentiality, privacy, and access. For additional
information see the MHIN Security Report.
