August, 2010 - MHIN Partners with Sturgis Hospital for Interstate HIE Services
Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN) announces partnership today with Sturgis Hospital in Sturgis, Michigan for comprehensive health information exchange (HIE) services. As a result of the new partnership, the HIE platform will be used by physicians and clinical staff across the community to share patient records instantly, securely, and accurately, furthering the hospital’s goal to reduce costs and improve quality of care. The new relationship further expands the growth of the region’s multi-state health exchange.

Recently rated a Top 100 Hospital, Sturgis Hospital, an acute care facility located just north of the Michigan-Indiana border employs and partners with physicians across the community. As a result of new healthcare legislation, hospitals are working towards achieving the Meaningful Use requirements that were recently finalized through the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). As a crucial component of the new partnership, MHIN will provide the necessary resources to help Sturgis connect to an HIE and fulfill these requirements. For Sturgis, achieving Meaningful Use means partnering with MHIN to ensure their patients’ data will be appropriately accessible to providers in the community.

July, 2010 - IU School of Medicine- South Bend Partners with MHIN
This week, MHIN announces a new partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine in South Bend. The new academic partnership will mean an enhanced educational curriculum that focuses specifically on the role and significance of health information exchange (HIE) and electronic health records (EHR) in modern health care for students training to be medical professionals.

Building the new curriculum is a crucial step in bridging the gap between modernized health information technology innovations that are rapidly changing the way the healthcare industry functions and the inherent lack of familiarity healthcare providers—both new and old—have with these innovations purely based on their novelty. It is becoming increasingly apparent to medical schools like IU that integrating instruction on how to use an HIE and EHR into medical school is essential to preparing medical students to practice modern health care.

May, 2010 - MHIN Partners with Elkhart General Healthcare System
MHIN announces its partnership with Elkhart General Healthcare System to bring health information exchange (HIE) services to the Elkhart medical community. As a result of the new partnership, doctors can now receive electronic copies of medical records and laboratory results from Elkhart General Hospital (EGH) instantly and securely. Additionally the HIE platform may be used by doctors across the community to share patient records with each other more quickly. Ultimately this partnership means improved patient care through a more coordinated and streamlined transfer of patient information.

"The association with MHIN has many huge benefits for Elkhart General Hospital, our medical staff, and our patients. The real time results of lab testing, radiology results and hospital documents are sent to the physician's computer, and that means the results are known to the physician immediately and in the patient's electronic medical record. There will be less duplication of tests as physicians have access to the patient’s record electronically. This is particularly helpful in the emergency department,” said Dr. Mark Sandock, Physician Consultant at Elkhart General Hospital.

May, 2010 - Bendix Family Physicians Celebrate First Year of Technologically Advanced Care to South Bend's West Side
On May 18, 2010, Bendix Family Physicians celebrates their first anniversary of healthcare service to the west side community of South Bend. The medical practice and community health program facility has seen major success in its first year of operation. Of these notable successes was their set-up to go live with an electronic health record system that is completely integrated with other community providers including area hospitals, laboratories, and radiology centers through the Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN) on the day it opened.

Unique in many ways, Bendix stands apart from many other medical clinics for underserved communities for its unique birth story and for its unprecedented growth and success since the doors opened last spring. A collaborative of the city’s two hospitals, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) and Memorial Health System and the City of South Bend, Bendix represents the good work that can be accomplished through the spirit of cooperation and teamwork. Today it serves a registry of over 1,000 patients with a fully-equipped, state of the art x-ray center, in-house laboratory facility, and its connection to MHIN.

Bendix was derived from a group of patients’ requests, marked by a Community Needs Assessment indicating inadequate access to healthcare services for residents in the area’s west side neighborhoods. SJRMC donated the facility, which would eventually become Bendix Family Physicians, to the City of South Bend. South Bend then transferred it over to Community Health Partners, who helped facilitate the building’s transformation from purely abandoned to alive with some of the most advanced technology in healthcare today.

As a crucial component of Bendix’s progressive technological infrastructure, MHIN has been actively receiving and sending out Bendix patient data through the interface since it opened its doors last year. The cost for the implementation, training, and interface services was underwritten by both of the hospitals. This joint effort truly reflects the goals of MHIN to create a fully connected healthcare community where all patients can receive the best care possible from area providers. Executive Director of Community Health Partners and Bendix Family Physicians, Josephine Iden expressed her gratitude toward MHIN for the partnership.

“It is so wonderful to have a shared passion with MHIN to serve the patients of our community through the transmission and sharing of medical health information,” Iden said.

Join the staff and community of Bendix Family Physicians in celebrating their first birthday on Thursday, May 20 from 1 pm-5 pm. They will be hosting a free neighborhood picnic and live band. Bendix Family Physicians is located at 1010 N Bendix Drive in South Bend, IN 46617.

March, 2010 - SJPN finds high, long-term cost benefit in voice dictation software provided through MHIN
Just over a year ago, the Saint Joseph Physician Network (SJPN) began the adoption of the Dragon voice dictation service through their existing partnership with the Michiana Health Information Network (MHIN). Dragon Medical was created in a line of products developed by Nuance Communications, Inc. to help reduce cost and increase provider efficiency through a quicker physician documentation process.

The Dragon Medical voice dictation software designed for medical terminology uses highly sophisticated voice recognition techniques with a handheld microphone/ remote device (PowerMicII) that allows the physicians to quickly and easily dictate their clinical messages into their own personal computers and literally watch the words transcribe onto the screen in real time. Use of the software guarantees a high level of accuracy while completely eliminating traditional turnover time between actual dictation and reception of the final transcribed documentation after being outsourced to a transcribing company.

The result of this adoption has had a dramatic cost-saving impact on SJPN, saving the prominent physician network over $200,000 per year in transcribing costs. MHIN provided instrumental support in designing and implementing the solution for SJPN in addition to offering training to physicians on software use. Dale Deardorff, MD, Chief Physician Executive for SJPN was quick to emphasize this impact. “Huge money saver—no question about that,” he said enthusiastically of products and services provided by MHIN. In fact, Deardorff is so convinced of its value that he considers it to be “the way of the future” for physician transcribing needs.

Though still in a transition phase, the network brags nearly complete adoption of the Dragon Medical product with only one remaining network practice not yet using it. “The more our physicians use Dragon, the more documentation will improve,” Deardorff said. “With the right experience, it is a definite time saver.” SJPN’s success with the Dragon Medical is helping to pave the way for increased adoption of innovative voice dictation services by other area providers as well. MHIN offers Dragon Medical as both an up front purchase and as a subscription model to help physicians adopt the product.

February, 2010 - MHIN Celebrates 10 Years
This year, the Michiana Health Information Network marks its 10th year of health information exchange services to our healthcare community. It is hard to believe that in 1999 we were implementing access to view results online, and today we have over 3,200 healthcare professionals connected throughout northern Indiana and southwest Michigan. We are proud of the strides we have made in establishing our network, and we are helping to pave the path of progressive healthcare IT not only for this community but also for the country.

Throughout our growth and development, our ultimate goal has remained the same—100% of patient data in the hands of the provider at the time of care. In 2002, we implemented our first Electronic Health Record (EHR), and in 2005 we launched an electronic result inbox. Two years later in 2007, we embarked on new efforts to incorporate even more providers into one network and launched an interoperability service for physician practice EHR’s and institutions. Today, in 2010, the Michiana community is one of the most connected healthcare communities in the United States.

Our initiatives would not be possible without the support and participation of our healthcare community. We would like to thank all of the healthcare providers—area hospitals, medical labs, private practices, extended care facilities, radiology centers, and so many others— for your involvement and support. We are eternally grateful to you because you are our network. Your spirit of cooperation and reciprocity is fueling a health exchange that benefits every patient in our community. With great enthusiasm and focus, we are now launching MHIN into a new decade. It is a decade filled with promise for healthcare IT advancements, and we know we are only beginning to see what we can do with a truly connected healthcare community. Thank you for your role in this.

Our network’s strength is as much your success as it is ours. We are pleased to share this mark of achievement with you.
